Dune House

Atlantic Coast, US

This project presented site-related challenges given its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The existing house on a dune was removed and local and federal government agencies including FEMA and DEP were consulted in order to establish a new home which maximizes its views and footprint. The new home is built on pilings, but is not apparent with proper siting, design and landscape architecture.

Site Development

Care was taken to maximize circulation while preserving views of the Atlantic Ocean. The kitchen opens up to an eating area and two living areas. Outdoor seating areas exist on both levels and can be accessed throughout. An outdoor fireplace provides warmth on cool nights, and storage for recreational gear exists out of sight underneath the home.

Interior

Unique details lending character to the home include a functional foyer with ocean views that includes a pet area located underneath the main staircase and a bookcase that swings open to a hidden mechanical room. The master bedroom is located on the first floor and has ocean views on three sides.
